Injury-hit England have called up Middlesex batsman Owais Shah as cover for their Test series in India starting on Wednesday, a team official said.

"He will fly to the U.K. tomorrow and arrive in India on Tuesday," England media manager Andrew Walpole said.

Shah is the third player to be summoned from England's A tour of West Indies, after opening batsman Alastair Cook and seamer James Anderson.

England captain Michael Vaughan is doubtful for the first Test in Nagpur due to recurrence of a long-term knee problem while opening batsman Marcus Trescothick has returned home for personal reasons.

Middle-order batsmen Kevin Pietersen and Paul Collingwood (back strains) and fast bowler Simon Jones (stomach bug) are also struggling for fitness.

Shah, 27, who has played 15 one-dayers, enjoyed a prolific 2005 domestic season.

England play three Tests and seven one-dayers in India.
