Indian captain Rahul Dravid has called for cricket contests with Pakistan to be put on regularised schedule in the same way as the Ashes series between Australia and England.

Dravid said he believed that there was a need for a schedule as excessive cricket between the two nations would diminish the interest and excitement surrounding the contests.

"It is natural that if you play too much against one country people tend to lost interest," Dravid told a news conference in Lahore on Friday.

"The two boards I think are working on a solution which would be good for cricket in both countries."

Australia and England compete for the Ashes every two years, alternately hosting the Test series.

India are in Pakistan for their second tour since 2004 while Pakistan visited India last year to play three Tests and six one-day internationals. In two years the two teams have played six Tests and 16 one-day internationals.

The two countries did not have any bilateral cricket contests between 1999 and 2004 because of strained political relations.
