Australia vice-captain Adam Gilchrist was reported to the International Cricket Council on Monday for showing dissent during his team's loss to South Africa on Sunday.

Gilchrist was charged with a level one offence after he was seen having an argument with Pakistani umpire Aleem Dar over a run-out involving South African batsman Boeta Dippenaar.

Television replays showed the batsman should have been given out but Dar gave him the benefit of the doubt and did not refer the matter to the video umpire.

Dippenaar was 47 at the time and went on to make 74.

Gilchrist could lose half his match fee if he is found guilty of the offence.

He is third Australian player to have been charged this summer for breaching the code of conduct after Brett Lee and Glenn McGrath were both reprimanded during the Sydney Test.

The Australian team were also penalised for a slow over rate during Sunday's match at the Gabba in Brisbane.

The selectors also announced Gilchrist would miss Australia's next two one-day matches as part of a policy designed to give senior players a break.

Brad Haddin would take his place in the squad.

"We're very mindful of the heavy workload that Adam has and this rest period has been programmed into his schedule since before the series began," chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns said in a statement.

"We've done this in the past and we find it gives players a well earned opportunity to freshen up. Brad has performed well for Australia previously and we have every confidence he'll go well this time around."
