Former India captain Polly Umrigar has been readmitted to Bombay Hospital in Mumbai for further treatment after having been diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma, a type of cancer that affects a part of the body's immune system, hospital sources said on Wednesday.

"Umrigar was readmitted to the hospital ward yesterday for another chemotherapy session which he underwent today," said hospital spokesperson Dr Ashish Tiwari.

"He's expected to remain in the hospital for four to five days during which a further assessment of his condition would be done," he added.

The 80-year-old Umrigar was admitted to the same hospital earlier this month and was kept in the ICU for four days to undergo chemotherapy.

He was later moved out of the ICU and then discharged on June 17.

Umrigar, among the giants of Indian cricket, played 59 Tests between 1948 and 1962, made over 3600 runs at an average of 42.22 with a then record of 12 centuries to boot.

He also represented the country in 17 unofficial Tests, before donning various other roles connected to the game.

Umrigar was also the chairman of the senior national selection committee, manager of the national team, pitch curator and executive secretary of the BCCI.
