Sourav Ganguly has emerged as the first choice overseas player for English county Northamptonshire, who are hoping the former Indian captain would join them in June.

Northamptonshire Cricket Club chief executive Mark Tagg said Ganguly is their "number one target" and they are specially looking to utilise his aggressive batting skills in the Twenty20 competition.

"We are in talks with Ganguly and his agent. Nothing has been signed but he is our number one target," Tagg was quoted as saying by the BBC Sport on Saturday.

Ganguly is expected to take the place of Chris Rogers, who has been called up for the Australia 'A' team.

"During the Twenty20 is where we're going to miss Chris and Ganguly's a quality batsman with huge experience," he said.

The ball, it seems is in Ganguly's court to make the final call on his signing with the club.

The report said Ganguly is unlikely to take the decision on the possible five-week contract before May 24, the day when India name their Test squad for the series against West Indies.

Ganguly could form a destructive Twenty20 batting partnership at Wantage Road with the big-hitting South African all-rounder Lance Klusener.

The 33-year-old, who finds himself out of both the Indian Test and one-day sides, has scored 5,221 runs in 88 Tests and 10,123 runs in 279 one-dayers.
