McGrath eager for the kill

Glenn McGrath says Australia are eyeing a quick kill in the first Ashes Test after dominating the first two days against England.

The hosts are in a commanding position in the series opener after piling on 602 for nine declared in their first innings before reducing England to 53 for three at stumps on the second day.

McGrath, who dismissed Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook in successive deliveries to leave the visitors reeling, said Australia are now in firm control of the match and wanted to drive home their advantage when play resumes on Saturday morning.

"We're well in front in this Test now," McGrath told a news conference at the Gabba on Friday.

"We've definitely got a lot of momentum now, and the confidence is with us.

"You couldn't ask for a better day than yesterday, and today's gone the same.

"To have 600 on the board, have them 3-50 and get a couple of wickets early in the morning, England will have to work really hard to get out of it."

But McGrath said Australia could still not afford to take the English too lightly after what happened in the last Ashes series when Australia won the first Test at Lord's only to lose the series 2-1.

"We had momentum, we had confidence and we won that Test quite convincingly yet England turned it around next Test," McGrath said.

"When we go one up, there's not too many series we lose, but we won't be taking it easy for the rest of this Test or the series.

"There's still a lot of cricket left in this game and we want to get out there, nail it and show them why we are the best team in the world."

McGrath said his two-wicket burst had also boosted his own confidence after 10 months out of the Test arena to care for his ill wife.

The lanky paceman has also been plagued by injuries in the past few seasons but demonstrated why he remains as lethal as ever by removing England's two openers.

"To get a couple of wickets early on always does wonders for the confidence," he said.

"I was probably 95 per cent happy with how I bowled. I think I'm that close to being where I want to be.

"Looking forward to tomorrow, I think I can really nail tomorrow. If we can remain patient, build up pressure, then the wickets will come."
