The Punjab Cricket Association on Tuesday was slapped a Rs 200 crore damage compensation suit, filed by the state government, over the acquisition of the land on which the stadium in Mohali is.
The suit claimed that PCA president I S Bindra misused his official position in the government in 1992, to get the lease agreement to hand over possession of land to the PCA signed, in violation of rules and sought repossession of the 15.35 acre land.
The suit demanded Rs 150 crore from the PCA, the amount estimated on the basis of income from holding various matches over the past 15 years, and another Rs 50 crore as damages.
The Court of Sub Divisional Magistrate, Mohali, has given the PCA time till November 15 to file its reply in the case, filed by Dr Surya Prakash on behalf of the Punjab Sports Department.
"As a last measure, we have filed a suit against them and we are now seeking possession of the land," Pargat Singh, Director of Sports, Punjab government, said.
Pargat, also secretary of the Sports Council, which is the managing body of the Directorate of Sports, said they had earlier sent a notice to the PCA on June 9, but it did not bother to reply to it.
