Dravid wants batsmen to fire

India are hoping their powerful batting line-up can shine against Australia in Friday's tri-series match, with a place in the final against West Indies on offer for the winning side.

Since scoring 309 against West Indies last week, India have failed to find form with the bat and only master batsman Sachin Tendulkar has provided any reliability.

"Irrespective of the result, I hope that we can put on a good performance with the bat," said captain Rahul Dravid, whose bowlers helped dismiss West Indies for 146 on Wednesday to ensure India stayed alive in the tournament with a 16-run victory.

"We need our batting to match the performance of our bowling. It's time for our players to stand up and be counted.

"It's going to be difficult against Australia but we have a chance to get to the final and hopefully we can take it."

India were dismissed for 162 against West Indies, with Tendulkar scoring 65 and man of the match Harbhajan Singh hitting 37 to add to his three wickets.

In their previous match against Australia, India were struggling at 35-5 before rain forced the game to be abandoned.

Dravid sought to play down fitness concerns about Yuvraj Singh and Ajit Agarkar.

Suresh Raina was promoted to number three slot against the West Indies on Wednesday because Yuvraj was unwell.

The Punjab left-hander was ill coming into the series and joined the team four days after his teammates had arrived in Kuala Lumpur on September 10.

Agarkar also seemed to be feeling the strains of the tropical heat but Dravid said they both were not ruled out for Friday's match yet.

"Hopefully they (Yuvraj and Agarkar) should be fit tomorow," he said.

Dravid said the win over West Indies was crucial for his team in more than one way.

"To come back strongly showed a lot of resilience and character. It also showed the areas of the game we can work on," he said adding it was the first full game India got to play.

The Kinrara wicket has proved to be quite deceptive. Dravid felt that the wicket could be judged only on Friday morning.

"It looks a good wicket, though it is hard to judge," he said.

"Most of these wickets had a bit of moisture in them a day before. Hopefully with the sun out tomorrow it should dry out, it should be a good wicket."

Asked to comment on Glenn Mcgrath, the Indian skipper said it was important to play all the Australian bowlers well.

"I don't think we can focus just on Mcgrath or (Brett) Lee, we have to play well right through 50 overs."

He cited the example of West Indian Dwayne Smith, who ripped through the Indian batting lineup.

"You wouldn't have thought about him that much as being one of your strike bowlers who can remove the top order but he did it, so it just shows that if you bowl in the right areas anyone can be a threat."

Ricky Ponting is expected to return to lead the Australians after Mike Hussey took over as captain for Monday's defeat to West Indies.

Spinner Dan Cullen, Michael Clarke, Shane Watson and Nathan Bracken will be sitting out Friday's match.

"We came here to see what different players can do," said Ponting. "We need to know what the young guys are capable of.

"We expect to play good cricket and give it our best."

With one match to play in the group stage, Australia have seven points, two behind the West Indies, while India are last on six points.

Australia would qualify for the final should rain interfere against India.

The final of the warm-up tournament for next month's Champions Trophy is on Sunday.
