The Pakistan Cricket Board wants to repeat the format of 2003 World Cup in 2011 edition, which it will co-host with India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

A top PCB official said Pakistan wanted reduced number of participating nations from 16 to 14 in 2011 World Cup and would garner support for the proposal at the joint World Cup committee meeting in Bangalore later this week.

"We are very much in favour of having a 14-teams format just like the 2003 World Cup. We don't want the format of the 2007 tournament," Shafqat Naghmi, the PCB Chief Operating Officer, told PTI on Wednesday.

Naghmi said the format for the 2011 World Cup was yet to be finalised and atleast three proposed formats would be discussed in Bangalore.

"A total of seven different formats, including a single league, have been put up for consideration of the four host countries and the International Cricket Council. We want the 2003 format repeated.

"We need to have a unified stand on the format before it is submitted to the ICC Executive Board for final approval," Naghmi said.

He said the 14-teams format was more viable as it guaranteed every team would play minimum six matches in the first round even if it was eliminated.

"We don't support this format like in the West Indies where if a good team has one bad day it goes out of the tournament. We will not support this format at all," he said.

Both Pakistan and India were eliminated in the first round of the 2007 World Cup which took the sheen off the event.

The Bangalore meeting will also discuss a common single visa to travel in all the four host countries.
