Makhaya Ntini and Jacques Kallis gave South Africa the upper hand on the first day of the third Test against Pakistan on Friday.

Captain Graeme Smith (64) led the hosts to 131 for five at the close after they had skittled out Pakistan for 157.

Paceman Ntini took four for 44 and seamer Kallis picked up four for 42 after the visitors were put in to bat on a pitch offering bounce and movement off the seam.

Mohammad Yousuf shone amid the Pakistan batting gloom, hitting 83.

Ntini struck first when he squared up Mohammad Hafeez, having him caught by AB de Villiers at third slip for 10.

Pakistan slipped to 27 for two when Yasir Hameed (seven) played forward unconvincingly to Ntini and steered a head-high catch to Kallis at second slip.

Kallis, introduced as first change in the 15th over, claimed his first wicket in his second over when Imran Farhat edged to Smith at first slip on 20.

STUNNING CATCH

The all-rounder then removed Younis Khan for eight, a leaping De Villiers taking a stunning catch at second slip.

Pakistan were 81 for five in the third over after lunch when Inzamam-ul-Haq (six) feathered a catch to wicketkeeper Mark Boucher off medium pacer Andrew Hall.

Dale Steyn and Kallis removed Kamran Akmal and Mohammad Sami for nought and four respectively before Shahid Nazir (three) lofted a ball from Ntini to Paul Harris at wide mid-on.

Danish Kaneria edged Kallis to Boucher without scoring and Ntini ended the innings by enticing Yousuf to loft a drive to Ashwell Prince in the covers.

South Africa made a shaky start to their reply when the recalled Boeta Dippenaar was trapped lbw for a duck by fast bowler Mohammad Asif.

Asif followed up by having Hashim Amla caught by wicketkeeper Akmal for two.

Opener Smith and Kallis shared a third-wicket stand of 80 before the all rounder was caught by Akmal off fast bowler Sami for 28.

Smith was out six overs later when he edged a ball from paceman Nazir to Inzamam at first slip.

Leg spinner Kaneria struck the final blow of the day when he bowled De Villiers for 11 with a googly in the penultimate over.

Prince was left 18 not out with nightwatchman Harris yet to score.

The series is level at 1-1.
