Spinners give Pakistan glimmer of hope

Pakistan battled to save the first Test against South Africa by reducing the visitors to 76 for three after conceding a 159-run first-innings lead on the third day on Wednesday.

Jacques Kallis (18 ntot out) and Ashwell Prince (11 not out) steadied the ship at the close after South Africa had lost three wickets in the space of two runs to spinners Abdul Rehman and Danish Kaneria to slump to 43 for three.

The pair helped South Africa stutter to a 235-run overall lead.

Rehman dismissed skipper Graeme Smith (25) and Hashim Amla (0) and leg-spinner Kaneria had Herschelle Gibbs (18) caught shortly after the batsman had passed 6,000 runs in Tests in his 85th match.

Smith was caught behind trying to cut left-armer Rehman, who also won a tight stumping decision against Amla. Gibbs was caught off an inside edge by silly mid-off Faisal Iqbal in the absorbing final session.

Earlier South African spinner Paul Harris took five wickets as Pakistan were bowled out for 291 runs at tea, conceding a big lead in reply to South Africa's first-innings score of 450.

Three of Harris's victims in the second session were stumped by Mark Boucher, who set a new record for most dismissals for a Test wicketkeeper.

Playing in only his fifth Test, his fourth against Pakistan, Harris took 5 for 73 -- his first five-wicket haul -- to help dismiss the home side after they resumed on 219 for six after lunch.

Boucher equalled Australian Ian Healy's mark of 395 when he stumped skipper Shoaib Malik (73) and then set the new record by stumping Umar Gul (12) seven overs later.
