New Zealand all-rounder Jacob Oram has been ruled out of his side's second Twenty20 against England on Thursday after straining a hamstring in the first match.

Oram top-scored for New Zealand with 61 in their 32-run loss at Eden Park in Auckland on Tuesday but strained his hamstring while bowling.

"I have a wee bit of a sore hamstring. It's not completely torn and it's not overly bad," Oram told reporters on Wednesday.

"It's similar to what I did in South Africa (last November) where I missed a test match but it's nowhere near as bad as that, thankfully."

Oram said he would have liked to play at Lancaster Park solely as a batsmen but the team management had decided not to risk exacerbating the injury ahead of the five one-day internationals and three-test series against England.

New Zealand are already without regular captain Daniel Vettori for Thursday's match in Christchurch due to an ankle injury, which also sidelined him in Auckland.

He trained with the team on Wednesday in a bid to prove his fitness for the opening one-day match in Wellington on Saturday.
