BCCI to propose ban on sledging to ICC

The Board of Control for Cricket in India will put forward a proposal to the International Cricket Council to ban sledging from the game.

"Cricket is not a physical, contact sport and we don't see why there should be any abusive language at all," BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah told the Hindustan Times.

Shah said he will formally make the request at the ICC chief executive committee meeting in Kuala Lumpur next week.

India's Test series in Australia last month was marred by controversy after spinner Harbhajan Singh was charged for allegedly racially abusing Australia's Andrew Symonds. The off-spinner was later cleared at an appeal.

Shah said any word that bordered on the offensive should not be tolerated.

"There will be cultural issues raised post the Sydney incident, so it is better to just cut out everything that could remotely cause a problem," he added.
