Pakistan skipper Shoaib Malik has revealed that his marriage plans with an Indian girl ended because both families could not reach an understanding on certain issues.
Speaking about his relationship with Hyderabadi girl Aisha, Malik also clarified that no nikah [wedding ceremony] took place between them as reported in sections of the media.
"Yes, I had a long relationship with her and we planned to get married. But no nikah ever took place, and in the end our families could not reach an understanding on various things," he said.
He dismissed reports that he dumped the girl because of family pressure after the death of his father in 2006.
"No, there was no pressure on me. But, in marriage, it is important for both families to have an understanding," he said.
Malik said he has no regrets about wanting to marry Aisha and revealed that they are still friends.
He, however, made it clear that he has no immediate plans to wed as he is concentrating on his cricket career.
"But, yes, my family is looking out [for a girl] and I will take care of their wishes. I have become captain and have now achieved a lot in my cricket career. So if a good rishta [proposal] comes along I have no problems," he said.
Malik's relationship with Aisha became fodder for newspapers and the Pakistani players were feted to a grand reception by Aisha's parents when the team toured India in 2005.
