India captain Anil Kumble won the toss and elected to bat on the opening day of the fourth and final Test match against Australia at the Adelaide Oval on Thursday.

India went in with a five-bowler attack as they included off spinner Harbhajan Singh in the side leaving out struggling opener Wasim Jaffer.

Special: Rivalry adds spice to finale

All-rounder Irfan Pathan was handed the job of opening the batting with Virender Sehwag.

Australia made two changes in their team as opener Matthew Hayden returned to the team in place of Chris Rogers and paceman Shuan Tait making way for spinner Brad Hogg.

Australia lead the series 2-1 after victories in the first two Tests at Melbourne and Sydney. India won the third Test at Perth by 72 runs.

Australia: Ricky Ponting (captain), Phil Jaques, Matthew Hayden, Mike Hussey, Michael Clarke, Andrew Symonds, Adam Gilchrist, Brad Hogg, Brett Lee, Mitchell Johnson and Stuart Clark.

India: Anil Kumble (captain), Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Irfan Pathan, Ishant Sharma, RP Singh and Harbhajan Singh.
