The home team, chasing 267 to win, were bowled out for 215 with skipper Daniel Vettori taking three for 32 with his left-arm spin. Owais Shah top scored with 69.
Earlier, Scott Styris and Jacob Oram hit half-centuries to guide New Zealand to 266 for five in 50 overs.
The second match in the series was abandoned as a no-result.
