Harbhajan dismisses fitness doubts

Off-spinner Harbhajan Singh on Monday declared that he is fully fit for the upcoming three-Test series against South Africa.

The national selectors meet in Bangalore on Monday evening to pick India's squad for the first two Tests against South Africa and there were reports that Harbhajan could be rested for not proving his fitness.

However, the Punjab bowler quashed all rumours, saying he is fully fit and ready to prove himself if asked to by the Board.

"I am fully fit. I could not go through a fitness test at the NCA because there was a function at my home. I had already informed the Board about it," Harbhajan told rediff.com.

Former physio John Gloster's report at the end of the Australia tour had mentioned that the off-spinner needed two weeks' rest to recover from a hamstring injury and thus there were doubts about him being selected.

"I have told the Board that I am fit. If they ask me, I am ready to prove my fitness anytime they want," he added.

Despite a new ruling that all injured players must undergo a fitness test ahead of a series, the selectors went by the Board's word and picked Harbhajan in the 14-man squad for the Test series against South Africa, starting in Chennai on March 26.

Yuvraj Singh, who is also recovering from a knee injury, went though the fitness test successfully this morning at the National Cricket Academy and was selected.
