A world record sixth wicket stand of 104 between David Hussey and Wriddhiman Shah went in vain as Kings XI Punjab romped home to their fourth win on the trot by handing a nine-run defeat on Kolkata Knight Riders in a thrilling Indian Premier League tie in Mohali on Saturday.
The match before a packed PCA Stadium went down the wire even after Irfan Pathan and S Sreesanth wrecked the Knight Riders' top order only to see Hussey and Shah producing a sensational 104 off 55 balls -- a world record in Twenty20 cricket.
The duo resurrected the Knight Riders innings from a hopeless 50 for 5 at the end of 10 overs, and raised hopes of an improbable victory before the skyrocketing asking rate caught them up.
Hussey, who was out in the penultimate over, made a blistering 71 off 46 balls with the help of four boundaries and an equal number of sixes while Saha's unbeaten 32-ball knock of 59 included four sixes.
Requiring 19 in the final over, Saha and Ajit Agarkar could take just nine off Pathan, who bowled brilliantly throughout the innings and finished with figures of 4-0-18-2 to win the man of the match award.
The other successful Kings XI bowler, Sreesanth, returned with two wickets for 25.
Earlier, Piyush Chawla smashed Ishant Sharma for 20 runs in the last over as Kings XI Punjab piled up 178 for 6.
In the last over, Ishant bowled to Irfan Pathan (24 not out) for one leg bye. Then Chawla was in full flow as he hit the Kolkata Rider bowler for three fours, one six over extra cover and a two. The sequence was 1, 4, 4, 2, 4, 6.
Chawla remained not out on 21.
Umar Gul bowed a good spell to dismiss the Sri Lankan pair of Kumar Sangakkara (28) and Mahela Jaywardene (10).
Australian Shaun Marsh again was the pick of the Punjab batsmen again with 40, with five boundaries and a six.
He put on 28 for the opening wicket with James Hopes before the latter was caught by Hodge of Ashok Dinda for 18.
Sangakkara joined Marsh and they carried the total to 82, with a partnership of 54 runs for the second wicket. An injured Sangakkara later batted with a runner.
Yuvraj chipped in with 17.
