Jaggernauth, Ponting see plenty of turn ahead

West Indies debutant spinner Amit Jaggernauth says he expects the Sabina Park wicket for the first Test against Australia to offer "huge" turn in the latter stages.

Australia made 301 for four on the opening day of the first Test on Thursday, with Jaggernauth claiming the wicket of Michael Hussey.

"For a first day track I thought the pitch had some degree of turn and I would expect, as the Test goes along, the turn would definitely increase," said the Trinidadian. "On the third and fourth day it is really going to be spinning huge."

The extra spin could help Jaggernauth, but would also be a test for West Indies batting fourth against Australian leg-spinner Stuart MacGill.

Australia captain Ricky Ponting, who struck a superb 158, agreed that there could be significant turn in the pitch later in the Test and expected MacGill to exploit it.

"There wasn't a lot on offer for the spinner (Jaggernauth) but he kept tossing the ball up and giving himself the chance to take wickets," he said.

"He might be hard work in the second innings when the wicket starts to break up a little more but Stuart MacGill will come in to play for us.

"There was enough spin there for an off-spinner and Stuart spins the ball appreciably. I think he will play a big role, whether that be tomorrow or on day three."

Jaggernauth did not bowl during the morning session and when he was handed his chance by skipper Ramnaresh Sarwan, Ponting and Michael Hussey were already well settled on their way to a 137-run partnership.

"Being given the ball with Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey at the crease you are up against a challenge and I thought that my performance was a decent one," said Jaggernauth, who ended the day with one for 74 off 20 overs.

"It was not bad but there was room for improvement. I was a bit too aggressive and I learnt I need to be a little more patient at this level."
