Left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan grabbed six wickets to put Bangladesh on top on the second day of the first Test against New Zealand in Chittagong on Saturday.

The Kiwis, replying to Bangladesh's first innings 245, were reduced to 155 for nine at the close with captain Daniel Vettori 48 not out.

Shakib finished with figures of six for 31 from 24 overs, his first five-wicket haul in a Test.

After Vettori the next highest score for New Zealand was Brendon McCullum's 25.

The dangerous McCullum was caught at mid-on by Abdur Razzak off Shakib, who also had the experienced Jacob Oram snapped up at short mid-wicket for a duck.

Earlier, Vettori picked up five wickets and pace bowler Iain O'Brien three.

Left-arm spinner Vettori took five for 59 in 36 overs, his 16th five-wicket haul in Tests.

Mehrab Hossain (83) and Mushfiqur Rahim (79) shared a stand of 144 for the fifth wicket to help the home team recover from 44 for four.

O'Brien broke the partnership when Hossain was caught at short cover in the fourth over of the day. It was his maiden test half-century.

Rahim was caught at short fine leg by How off Vettori.
