Buoyed by the encouraging trends in favour of the Congress in the Lok Sabha election, party General Secretary Ambika Soni today fired the first salvo for Sonia Gandhi to become the prime minister.

"Sonia Gandhi is the leader of the Congress party. We want that our party chief should become the prime minister," she told reporters in New Delhi.

Asked if the Congress president was tipped to head the government, Soni said, "Sonia Gandhi would herself talk to the leaders of the party's allies for election of a leader to head the secular front government."

Expressing confidence that a non-NDA secular government would be installed at the Centre, she said that the people had rejected the ruling BJP-led NDA.

Soni recalled it was the BJP-led government which decided to dissolve the 13th Lok Sabha eight months ahead of schedule in view of the BJP's victory in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan but the people had rejected the ruling coalition.
