Merchant Ivory celebrate 40 years together

Seven popular feature films of Merchant Ivory Productions are to be screened during a festival to be held in Bombay, Bangalore and Delhi from February 18. This festival will mark 40 years of the partnership.

Cotton Mary, the latest Merchant Ivory production, will also be premiered during this period. The proceeds will be used by CRY to help cyclone-struck children in India's eastern coastal state, Orissa.

The films being shown to celebrate the longest producer-director-writer relationship are The Householder, Shakespearewallah, Howard's End, The Proprietor, Jefferson In Paris, A Soldier's Daughter Never Cries and Heat And Dust. India-born Ismail Merchant tied up with American-born James Ivory 40 years ago and both have worked with Polish-born English novelist Ruth Prawar Jhabvala since 1963.

Meanwhile, a four-day human rights film and cartoon festival has commenced in New Delhi to raise the awareness of people about the various human rights issues. Organised by the British High Commission, the festival includes When Good Men Do Nothing by Mike Robinson and Cry Freedom by Richard Attenborough.
