Apollo Tyres ex-chairman Raunaq Singh dead

Sardar Raunaq Singh, the former chairman of Apollo Tyres Ltd, died in New Delhi early on Monday. He was 79. Singh is survived by his wife, three sons and a daughter.

Apollo Tyres ex-chairman Raunaq SinghHe died at his New Friends Colony residence shortly after midnight, sources said. His son, Onkar S Kanwar, was recently made chairman of the company as Singh was keeping unwell.

Singh was a prominent businessman and past president of PHDCCI. The cremation will take place at Lodhi Road Crematorium later on Monday, the sources said.

Industry condoles death

Ashok Soota, president of the Confederation of Indian Industry, said that with the passing away of Raunaq Singh, the country has lost an eminent and charismatic first generation entrepreneur committed to the industry association movement in India.

Expressing his condolences, the CII president said that the various achievements of Raunaq Singh will serve as a role model for many young people. Raunaq Singh represented the first group of post-partition businessmen in India, he stated.

Though hailing from an ordinary background and starting as a steel trader, Raunaq Singh went on to establish the Raunaq Group of Industries with a turnover of $525 million, employing over 9,000 people and diversifying into new sectors such as infotech, pharmaceuticals and finance.

With his dynamic and innovative leadership style, Raunaq Singh had been instrumental in strengthening several industry and trade associations, the CII president said.
