With Devdas, Ash and Shah Rukh finally played a romantic couple. Though they were not destined to end up together in this tragic film based on Saratchandra Chattopadhyay’s novel.

As Paro, Ash cast aside doubts of whether she would deliver as well as Suchitra Sen in Bimal Roy’s 1955 classic, Devdas. Ash won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress.

Devdas also brought her international acclaim when it went to the Cannes Film Festival. The next year, she was invited as one of the judges at the festival.

She then bagged two international films, Gurindher Chadha’s Bride And Prejudice and Coline Serreau’s Chaos, with Meryl Streep.
