Sena leaders elected as Bombay civic heads under new systemLeader of the house in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and Shiv Sena leader Nandu Satam was on Tuesday elected as mayor of the country's premier civic body. He will be the first-ever head of the newly-introduced mayor-in-council system. His colleague and Sena leader Gajanan Thakre was elected chairman of the BMC's general body. Both of them were declared unopposed as the Opposition did not field its candidates for the posts in protest against the mayor-in-council system, civic sources said. Municipal Commissioner Girish Gokhale will formally announce the appointments on Saturday at the BMC's general body meeting. Bombay Regional Congress Committee and member of Parliament Murli Deora said the Opposition did not field its candidates as it was not happy with the mayor-in-council system, and declared that when the Congress comes to power in the state it will scrap the system.
