Srikrishna report to be made public next week, says Munde

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Gopinath Munde on Monday announced that the report of the Srikrishna Commission, which probed the Bombay communal riots of December 1992 and January 1993 and the subsequent bomb blasts, would be made public within a week

Addresssing a press conference, Munde, who is also the home minister, said the decision to publish the report would be taken in a cabinet meeting to be held in this week.

''We will not hide any content in the report and will make it public within a week," he promised.

Justice B N Srikrishna, who was appointed by the government to investigate into the circumstances leading to the riots and the subsequent serial bomb blasts in Bombay, submitted his report on February 16 to the state government.

Shifting to electoral matters, he referred to threats by former chief minister Sharad Pawar and Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad stating that if the Congress came to power at the Centre, it would dismiss the Shiv Sena- BJP government in the state. Munde said the alliance government could not be toppled as it had the support of the majority in the assembly. Therefore, he said the formula used to dismiss minority governments in the northern states could not be used in Maharashtra.

Meanwhile, several leaders of the Congress, Janata Dal, and Muslim organisations, including the All-India Milli Council, the All-India Muslim Personal Law Board, the Jamiat-ul-Ulema-e-Hind, the Ulema Council and the Mumbai Muslim Youth Federation, have demanded the immediate publication of the report.
