Hippo killed in Bombay zoo

A five-year-old hippopotamus, Guru, died a painful death after he fell inside a pit at the Jijamata Udyan at Byculla in south Bombay on Friday night.

According to zoo sources, the hippo fell into the pit dug for the construction of a moat, during a fight with another hippo. The seriously injured Guru could not survive despite medical attention.

The zoo is currently undertaking a Rs 10 million programme for removing all cages, replacing them with wide moats.

The Municipal Karmachari Kamgar Sena may move the Bombay high court against the garden superintendent and deputy garden superintendent of the zoo for their alleged negligence resulting in the hippo's death.
