Navy rescues fishermen from choppy seasA search and rescue team of the Western naval command yesterday rescued four fishermen stranded in a trawler that was drifting away off the Murud coast in Raigad district in stormy seas. Informed of the trouble by the superintendent of police, Raigad, the navy sent two helicopters from INS Kunjali from Bombay. After a half-hour search covering over 10 miles, the rescue team located the trawler, defence sources said. All four fishermen abroad were winched aboard the helicopters and brought back to INS Kunjali at 5 pm yesterday. All four fishermen, including the owner of the trawler, Uttam, were in good condition other than the dehydration for which they were treated at INS Kunjali. The fishermen said they had been drifting for the past three days following engine trouble and a fuel leak. After treatment, the fishermen were handed over to the civilian authorities, the defence sources said. |
