Chain-snatcher gets 111 years in jail

Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Holambe Patil awarded 111 years in prison and a fine of Rs 37,000 to a thief who had made a habit of stealing wedding chains.

The accused, taxi driver Mohamad Yakub Babu Ajim Shah, was arrested last November by the Malabar Hill police in Bombay while changing the number plate of a taxi.

During interrogation he revealed he had snatched 37 wedding chains between Colaba and Kandivali in 1997.

The accused, who used taxi number MRO 6568, changed the number to MRO 8588, 8688, 6588 and 8680 during the day to avoid any police locating his vehicle.

In his order, Judge Patil said the accused, who had committed 37 crimes, was being sentenced for three years of imprisonment for each case. He was also fined Rs 1,000 for every case. If Shah is unable to pay the fine, he would be imprisoned for an additional month, the judge ruled.
