The Rediff Interview/R G Kadam, DCP, Bombay Police

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone-IV, Bombay, R G Kadam, is spearheading the investigation against Additional Judge J W Singh of the sessions court. The judge is accused of collaborating with the Karachi-based gangster Chhota Shakeel. Excerpts of an exclusive interview with S Hussain:

What is the case against Judge Singh?

Singh is charged under Section three and Sub Section 2 of the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act for the abetment of organised crime.

How did you allow him to abscond and not arrest him earlier?

Arresting a sessions court judge is always a dicey matter and just a First Information Report is not sufficient indictment. We had to corroborate the evidence against him.

What is the evidence you could establish against him?

We have established the location and timings of Singh's telephonic conversation with Chhota Shakeel. He kept on denying his links with Liyaqat Shaikh and since Shaikh is dead it was difficult to prove it. However, following a raid at his house some documents were recovered which clearly shows his nexus with Shaikh.

What happens if he approaches the Supreme Court and gets anticipatory bail?

We have already got a caveat-like request issued to the Supreme Court government pleader that his appeal should not be entertained as he is an absconder. Meanwhile, we will get a non-bailable warrant issued against him and if remains on the run for another week we will get him declared a proclaimed offender.
