I wish Mr Shenoy had touched on the CPI-M and Jyoti Basu in 1962 when China invaded India. After supporting the British, the Chinese, he wants to present the country to an Italian clothed in a sari who took on an Indian citizenship with great reluctance. K Sastri

I agree with Shenoy about China's advantage over a weak and independent Kashmir. The SAARC nations should sit around the table and chalk out plans to permit a United Nations office in Kashmir. Now every important office of the UN and the world's financial bodies are in the West. There is none in Asia. There must be a mechanism whereby Asian countries can have a say in these bodies. Kashmir is an ideal place with no polluting units. It could be a good earner of foreign exchange too. This will be very cost-effective and ensure the developing countries will not have to run to Switzerland or the US for a decision. Today, in the age of information technology, one can sit in Kashmir and interact effectively with world bodies anywhere on the globe. The nations from SAARC and the Middle-East could pool the money to run the world bodies in Kashmir. The wealth generated should be directed to administering Kashmir alone. Rama

Sarvadharma samabhaava may be the central tenet of Hinduism, but that certainly is against Catholicism, as far as I understand that religion. Catholicism does not recognise any other religion, Hinduism, Islam, or even the Protestantism. They also believe that every human soul suffers from original sin, and that to save such souls a practising Catholic must sincerely try to get every other human being to convert to Catholicism and find salvation. This attitude will continue to cause friction and divide people. The problem will remain for as long as Catholicism does not recognise the existence of other religions. Umesh Tiwari

You said it right. Opportunism is nothing new to Marxists and Communists. Our Indian Communists live only by that name of Communism. All they do is organise opportunistic political movements in India to survive. How many votes they get in each election shows their influence on the Indian population. These desperados are wasting their intelligence and time on shattered dreams. NK

Mr T V R Shenoy is a BJP man. He was thrown out of the Malayala Manorama for his BJP line of articles. Being a Konkan Brahmin, he naturally tends to support the upper caste party. I read his article as a Sangh Parivar newsletter only. A Christian

Good article. Is it really true that Pope John Paul II called the Protestant missionaries "wolves"? Could you provide more evidence -- the venue, the occasion, the date etc? Burkitt |
