Cable operators plan two-day strike in Maharashtra: PTICable operators in Maharashtra will shut down transmission of all channels on Tuesday and Wednesday to protest against the state government's decision to hike entertainment tax. In 1992, the state government started charging an entertainment tax on cable television networks. The operators were paying the tax, but the government recently increased it by 100 per cent to Rs 30 per month per subscriber, a release by cable operators said. The government had also been forcing cable operators to collect the money for 100 per cent connectivity, the release said. The operators had recently met chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, and despite assurances, no action had been taken. All cable operators, including those from Bombay, New Bombay, Thana, Raigad, Nagpur, Akola, Amravati, Bhandara, Latur and Nasik will shut down transmission, the release added.
