Nagpur civic body passes Vidharbha resolution unanimouslyIn a rare show of unanimity, the Bharatiya Janata Party-dominated Nagpur Municipal Corporation on Wednesday passed unanimously a resolution demanding statehood for Vidharbha even after the BJP's national council meeting in Nagpur on Monday avoided commenting on the issue. Mayor Vasundhara Masurkar tabled the resolution and the House adopted it without any dissent. Two Shiv Sena corporators did try to express dissent, but did not press the issue. The resolution has urged the Maharashtra government to officially table a resolution on statehood for Vidharbha in the winter session of the state legislature, which is scheduled to begin in Nagpur on November 27, and get approval for the same. The BJP's Manohar Shende had moved an amendment for the inclusion of the statehood demand in the party's political resolution at the national council meeting. However, during the discussion on the resolution on August 28, Union Home Minister L K Advani had prevailed upon Shende to withdraw it on the plea that unless the state assembly passed a resolution to the effect the National Democratic Alliance government at the Centre would not consider it. Meanwhile, Congress Member of Parliament Vilas Muttemwar has congratulated the NMC for unanimously passing the statehood resolution. "I personally thank all party corporators for showing the courage to pass the resolution," he said. UNI
