Suspension of five Sena MLAs revoked

The Maharashtra legislative assembly on Monday unanimously revoked the suspension of five of the 13 Shiv Sena legislators who were suspended for their unruly behaviour on July 25 this year in the wake of the arrest of the Sena chief Bal Thackeray.

The motion, moved by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Rohidas Patil, was passed by a voice vote.

Similarly, the punishment of the remaining eight MLAs, who were suspended for a year, has been brought down to six months.

The MLAs, whose suspension has been revoked with immediate effect are - Dilip Bhosle (Bhusawal), Sitaram Bhoir (Belapur), Ravindra Mane (Sangameshwar), Kalyanrao Patil (Yeola) and Gulabrao Patil (Erandol).

The names of eight Sena members, whose one-year suspension punishment has been curtailed by six months are Shivsharan Birajdar Patil (Solapur City), Anil Rathod (Ahmednagar), Subhash Wankhede (Hadgaon), Ashok Shinde (Hinganghat), Subhash Sabne (Mukhed), Suresh Salokhe (Kolhapur), Prakash Khedkar (Nanded) and R M Wani (Vaijapur).

The meeting to decide about the revocation was held in the Speaker's chamber on Monday morning and was attended by Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal, Leader of the Opposition in the assembly Narayan Rane and Bharatiya Janata Party group leader Gopinath Munde.

These MLAs had wrecked havoc in the lower house during the monsoon session on July 25 on hearing about Thackeray's arrest after being indicted by the Srikrishna Commission inquiring into the communal riots of 1992-93 in Bombay.

Rane along with other Sena members had given a cheque of Rs 300,000 to the Speaker's office as compensation towards the damages, which the Speaker refused.
