Ambedkar's party may withdraw support to DF govt

Syed Firdaus Ashraf in Bombay

The Democratic Front government in Maharashtra faced a crisis with one of its allies, the Bhartiya Republican Party-Bhaujan Mahasangh of Prakash Ambedkar threatening to withdraw support. The party has three members in the state legislature.

Sources in BRP-BMS said that Ambedkar is unhappy over the way the minor parties are being treated in the coalition.

It is also learnt that Ambedkar, who was in favour of a separate Vidarbha state and scrapping of the Enron project, was unhappy that both the Nationalist Congress Party and the Congress did not heed his demands.

The DF government has the support of 153 MLAs. It requires 145 MLAs to be in a majority in the 288 member House.

Ambedkar, who is in Pune, has called a press conference in Bombay on Thursday afternoon.

Ambedkar told rediff.com over phone from Pune that he would not comment on the matter. When asked about rumours that he was going to withdraw support, he said, "I will not deny these rumours too."
