Subhash Thakur, 2 others convicted in JJ shootout caseThree of the accused in the sensational JJ Hospital shootout case - Subhash Singh Thakur, Jayant Suryarao and Shyam Kishore Garikapatti - were today convicted by designated TADA judge P K Chawre. The period of conviction will be communicated to the three accused tomorrow. The court, however, has acquitted six others, including a woman. A member of the dreaded Arun Gawli gang - Suresh Haldankar, an undertrial - and two police constables were shot inside JJ Hospital on September 12, 1992 in Bombay by members of the rival Dawood Ibrahim gang. The shootout was a revenge strike ordered by Dawood after his brother-in-law was gunned down by members of the Arun Gawli gang. Dawood Ibrahim currently operates from a hideout in Karachi, while Arun Gawli, externed by the Bombay police, lives with his wife in a village near Pune. Advocate Rohini Failain, who represented the state in the case, told reporters that she will soon challenge the acquittal of the six accused in a higher court. Seven post-graduate doctors, who were treating Haldankar when he was killed, and MLA Pappu Kalani have already been acquitted by the Supreme Court for lack of evidence.
