Train services collapse as rains lash Bombay

E-Mail this report to a friend

Showers continued to lash Bombay for the third consecutive day today, but had their effect on Central Railway with signal failures reported from Diva, Dombivili and Kalyan stations.

To compound matters, the engine of the Saket Express to Faizabad broke down at Ambivili station early this morning, affecting the down local line. Several locals were stranded on the tracks at peak time this morning, giving a harrowing time to the commuters.

A Central Railway spokesman said work was in progress and the problem would be rectified soon.

Western Railway, however, continued to function smoothly with the locals running on time.

Meanwhile, terming these as unseasonal showers, the weather bureau has stated that the rains are expected to continue for another 24 hours.

On the reason for these showers, a spokesman for the weather bureau said it was due to the formation of a low pressure area over the north-east and east Arabian Sea extending from north Gujarat to Karnataka.
