Three cops sentenced on kidnapping charges

A local court in Thane has sentenced three police constables, found guilty of charges of abducting a youth and demanding ransom from his parents, to one and half years imprisonment.

First Class Judicial Magistrate P P Karnik, in her order, on Friday observed that 'the accused are serving in police department and it is their duty to protect the public and create faith in the mind of common man. Instead, they demanded money from the complainant and threatened him to file a case if their demands were not met with'.

"This is very serious matter and so benefit of probation of Offenders Act cannot be given to the accused," she said.

The policemen, attached to Kapurbawdi police station in the Thane, had gone to complainant Habulal Ramadin Kesarwani's house on September 29, 1996 and demanded Rs 25,000 saying he was selling ganja (drugs).

They threatened to file a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Act if he failed to pay the amount.

The policemen took him to a ground and let him off only when he promised to pay the amount.

However, when next day the complainant did not turn-up the accused visited his son Ajay Hublal Kesarwani and demanded Rs 10,000 and threatened to file a case if the demand was not met.

Ajay again was taken to the same ground and confined there. Meanwhile, his friends informed the family who in turn reported the matter to the police, which led to the arrest of the three policemen.

The three policemen are Ramdas Sudhakar Kawade (24), Bhaurao Santosh Suryawanshi (24) and Badan Dhama Bhilla (27).

A rickshaw driver Rakesh Soutan Singh 24, who was also charged along with the policemen, was, however, acquitted by the court.
