Kidnappers of Bombay diamond merchant nabbed

Police zeroed in on four culprits responsible for kidnapping a Bombay diamond trader and his wife and coercing them into transferring property worth Rs 76 million five months ago, police sources said.

With the arrest of four of the seven accused Tuesday, the sequence of the episode was unfolded in a city court Wednesday revealing the modus-operandi of the kidnappers' gang that lured a diamond trader into fraudulently transferring his share certificates and other property in their names.

According to police, the complainant G Chetani and his wife, approached one B Mukesh (wanted accused), a business associate, for a loan. Mukesh introduced the couple to his uncle, Devashi who agreed to transfer 2.2 million dollars obtained from REP licences issued in the name of their (accused) company into the account of the complainant.

He, however, demanded that the complainant submit their share certificates and other bank securities in the custody of the accused as guarantee against the amount loaned to them.

Mukesh along with six other accomplices slowly coerced the couple to transfer several share certificates, property and bank documents in the name of the accused and his accomplices. They later kidnapped the couple from south Bombay and shifted them to various places in the city to avoid detection.

However, a story about the couple's sudden disappearance was flashed in one of the local newspapers in Surat. On reading the news item, the accused, forcibly took the complainant to Surat and pressurised him to issue a statement that he had not been kidnapped.

They later released the complainant and his wife. The trader, however, immediately registered a case with the police, who traced the various accused and arrested them.
