Bombay police chief concerned over 'corruption' in police force

Bombay Police Commissioner M N Singh has expressed deep concern over the involvement of 18 policemen in graft cases this year and issued a special circular laying down stern guidelines for curbing such immoral and illegal practices among cops.

Singh, in his circular on October 3, has not only warned the entire force but also made Assistant Police Commissioners and Deputy Commissioners of Police responsible for checking corruption among their subordinates, official sources said.

If any cop is caught accepting bribes, the concerned ACP or DCP will attract an adverse entry in the Action Taken Report, the circular stated.

A policeman indulging in corrupt practice shall be suspended pending inquiry and the concerned officer in-charge of the police station shall be shifted without giving an opportunity to explain, the guidelines in the circular stated.

In yet another guideline, the police chief has asked all senior police inspectors to promptly report to the control room the registration of a corruption case against any police officer. The concerned superior officer should also be informed.

"Corrupt practices should be viewed seriously and maximum punishment provided under the rules be inflicted upon the cops found guilty of such offences," the circular said.

"Corruption has a direct bearing on the quality of the service offered by the police. It is expected of every police officer to maintain the highest standard of probity. Rightly or wrongly, a feeling persists in the public mind that money making has become the preoccupation of cops. This is most disgraceful for the police force," the circular added.
