Six hospitalised after ammonia leak in Bombay

Six persons were admitted to hospital on Thursday night after they complained of itching and watering of eyes following leakage of ammonia gas from a tanker of the Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilisers company, proceedings towards Gujarat, on the eastern suburbs of Bombay.

Police said that the top of a tanker of the RCF company hit a railway over-bridge while the driver tried to steer the vehicle from under the bridge despite not having the permission to take that particular route. Ammonia gas started leaking out of the damaged tanker.

Immediately, nine fire brigade engines were rushed to the spot and the leakage was controlled and a disaster averted. Except reports of itching and watering of eyes, there were no other major complaints from nearby residents.

Five of the victims were rushed to Shitla Nursing Home in Chembur, north east Bombay and the sixth was admitted to the RCF hospital and discharged after treatment.

The RCF police have confiscated the tanker and a manhunt has been launched against the driver, who is missing.
