Missing naval projectiles found in rail yardThe railway police in Bombay last week found four shells and some ammunition belonging to the Indian Navy lying unclaimed in a rail wagon at Bhayander in adjacent Thane district. Though initial reports said four surface-to-air missiles were recovered from the bogie, both - the railway police and the Indian Navy - denied any such recovery on Wednesday. Indian Navy spokesman R Madhusoodhan said the hardware recovered from the Bhayander yard comprised projectiles and not missiles. "These projectiles were missing for the past two years," he said. Madhusoodhan said a team of officials visited Bhayander and inspected the wagon. "They found some ammunition and shells...but there were no missiles in there," he said. Railway Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria too confirmed that there were no missiles in the bogie as was reported in the media. Maria said ten bogies were lying parked in the yard for the past two years. A team of senior officers of the Railway Protection Force and the Government Railway Police broke open the wagons. ''The ammunitions were in the eighth wagon," he said. The 10 wagons arrived at Bhayander from Jabalpur two years ago, but were reported missing. Defence sources in Jabalpur said some shells and ammunition were despatched from Jabalpur for Bombay, but missiles were not part of this consignment. Sources said both the navy and the railway police are looking into the matter independently. PTI
