E-Mail this report to a friend

The Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee Thursday condemned Agriculture and Textile Minister Ranjit Deshmukh's statement that the people of Konkan should demand statehood for the region since rich politicians from western Maharashtra had done injustice to the state's coastal belt.

Deshmukh himself is spearheading the demand for a separate state of Vidarbha.

Reacting to Deshmukh's public statement, made in Bombay on Wednesday, MPCC general secretary Rajiv Chavan said such "irresponsible" utterances were nothing but an attempt to create separatist tendencies in a cohesive state which was created for Marathi-speaking people.

Chavan urged the minister to be more careful with his statements and added that these could lead to demands for creation of separate states of Khandesh, Marathwada, Mumbai and Konkan.

Deshmukh and Nagpur MP Vilas Muttemwar have threatened to boycott MPCC elections have demanded independent PCC for Vidarbha.
