Four stabbed as Nanded tenseA tense situation prevailed in Nanded following stoning of a Ganesh immersion procession from a place of worship on Tuesday and subsequent police firing, even as four persons were stabbed on Wednesday. The four villagers who were stabbed have been admitted to the civil hospital, police said. Fifty-nine persons were injured and the condition of four, including two who received bullet wounds in the police firing, was stated to be critical. Twenty-four miscreants have been arrested in connection with stoning and rioting, Maharashtra Revenue Minister Ashok Chavan told reporters in Nanded. Chavan's father and former Union home minister S B Chavan, who belong to the city, district guardian minister Manikrao Thakre and state director general of police Subhash Malhotra visited the troubled areas. Thakre, appealing people not to give a communal colour to the stoning incident, told reporters that the immersion procession was passing through a route approved by the authorities. Thakre said stones were pelted from inside a place of worship and the situation turned violent, leading to rioting and arson. Chavan said all efforts would be made to safeguard the lives of people. Additional security forces would be deployed, if necessary, after reviewing the situation, he said and warned that action would be taken against any official found lax in his duty.
