Left parties in Maharashtra threaten
to pull out on Enron issue

The Left parties on Friday renewed their threat to withdraw support to the Democratic Front government in Maharashtra if it failed to set up an inquiry to fix responsibility for the controversial clearance to the Enron power project.

Stating this at a news conference in Bombay, Prof N D Patil of the Peasants and Workers' Party said the probe could be instituted under the Commission of Inquiry Act or handed over to a Supreme Court judge.

He said if Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray and Nationalist Congress Party leader Sharad Pawar were involved in approving the Enron deal, their role should also be probed.

Patil said the issue would be taken up at the next meeting of DF coordination committee and the Left parties would decide their stand depending on the government's response to its demands.
