Maharashtra bandh: Buses off
the roads, shops closed

The Maharashtra bandh, called by 50 trade unions and nine political parties to protest the 'anti-labour' policies of the Centre and state governments, began at the stroke of midnight.

Heavy security was in force in Bombay and throughout the state to maintain peace during the 24-hour bandh.

Suburban services of the Central and Western railways were running on schedule in the morning, but buses remained off the roads in Bombay.

The government has deployed para-military forces and home guards to help the police in maintaining law and order.

Shops and hotels remained closed as make-shift roadside tea stalls did brisk business in the early hours.

Examinations of the Maharashtra Public Service Commission and Technical Education Board as well as those of Mumbai University slated for Wednesday have been postponed.

Over 100,000 port and dock workers are also participating in the bandh.
