The Maharashtra government has decided to approach the Bombay high court with a petition for the early disposal of a case between the Bombay Municipal Corporation and some animal rights organisations, Minister of State for Urban Development Sunil Tatkare said in a meeting on Friday.
Alarmed by the concern voiced by the officials of the BMC, the government convened the meeting to discuss measures to counteract the growing canine menace in the city.
Officials of the urban development and law and judiciary departments, besides those from the BMC, attended the meeting.
In 1998, the BMC had decided to resume killing stray dogs, which some people felt were a menace.
But some animal rights organisations rushed to the high court and secured a stay on the order.
