Tyagi admitted to hospital

Our Correspondent in Bombay

The former Bombay police commissioner, R D Tyagi, whose bail application was rejected on Monday by the Supreme Court, has been admitted to a Bombay hospital after he complained of chest pain.

He was earlier admitted to a Bombay hospital in July after his bail plea was rejected by the Bombay High court.

Tyagi, who retired as director of the elite National Security Guards, had moved the court against the Bombay high court's refusal to grant him bail in connection with his indictment by the Srikrishna Commission inquiring into the infamous 1992-93 riots in the city.

The commission had held Tyagi responsible for the deaths of some persons in a bakery in south Bombay during the riots.

The men were shot dead on the pretext of being terrorists. At that time, Tyagi was joint commissioner of police (crime) and had led the police party that raided the bakery.

Tyagi is being attended by Dr R L Tiwari and is admitted in Intensive Cardiac Care Unit.

After the rejection of his bail, his arrest is on cards.

But so far the state government has not taken any action against him.
