Former police commissioner of Bombay Ramdeo Tyagi was arrested on Tuesday evening by the Special Task Force set up to implement the report of the Justice B N Srikrishna Commission, which had investigated the Bombay riots of 1992-93.
STF chief K P Raghuvanshi told rediff.com that Tyagi had been asked to surrender on Tuesday after the Supreme Court rejected his application for anticipatory bail on Monday.
Tyagi had signalled his intention to surrender in a letter to the STF, but he took ill on his return to Bombay on Tuesday morning and was admitted to Bombay Hospital. "So we sent our police force to the hospital and arrested him," said Raghuvanshi.
Asked how long Tyagi would be allowed to stay in hospital, Raghuvanshi said there was no bar on his being in hospital. "The doctor has given him a certificate of ill health and he is in the ICCU [intensive cardiac care unit]."
Raghuvanshi also said that there was no immediate need for doctors appointed by the state government to examine the former police officer.
He added that Tyagi's papers would be put up before a holiday court on Wednesday.
