Tyagi in police custody till August 23

Shiv Kumar in Bombay

A court on Wednesday remanded former Bombay police commissioner Ram Deo Tyagi to police custody till August 23 for his alleged involvement in a shooting incident during the 1992-93 Bombay riots.

Additional Chief Metropoliitan Magistrate C L Thool passed the order placing Tyagi, who was arrested on Tuesday, in police custody.

Tyagi, however, was not produced in court as he has been admitted to the Bombay Hospital with a chest pain complaint.

Tyagi was arrested after the Supreme Court rejected his plea for anticipatory bail on Monday in connection with the 1992-93 shooting incident at the Suleiman Bakery in which police killed nine persons.

Earlier, he was indicted by the Justice Sri Krishna Commission, which was appointed by the government to look into the causes of the 1992-93 communal riots in Bombay that followed the controversial demolition of the 16th century Babri mosque by Hindus in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh on December 6, 1992.

The Shiv Sena and the Bharatiya Janata Party have criticised Tyagi's arrest.

Nitin Gadkari, leader of opposition in the Maharashtra legislative council said the ruling Congress Party-Nationalist Congress Party alliance had Tyagi arrested with an eye on winning Muslim votes.

Tyagi has alleged that his arrest is politically motivated. He claimed that the shootout at the Suleiman Bakery was an act of self-defence.

The special task force looking into the incident has rejected this, and said the persons killed at the bakery were unarmed and shot at point blank range.

Apart from Tyagi, the task force has filed charges against 16 police personnel and 15 Shiv Sena leaders and activists.
